The Real Score of Health Insurance Plans in the State of California

from:

Issues and controversies are inevitable. The controversy happened on the White House during the Clinton Administration as well as the issues raised when President George W. Bush ordered the attack by the American and other allied forces to crush Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq three years ago just came out without anyone expecting it. It is also of topics of interest for different individuals when it comes to current event issues.

Even in the regional level, specifically in the state of California, there are issues that came out not only in federal governance but to social aspects as well. Having an actor-turned politician as the state’s governor as well as having the 40 percent allocation of the state’s revenues in education alone are just some of the issues that have been the talk of the town for quite some time. However, there is another issue that is not of interest to California residents yet it may directly affect them in one way or another.

That is, the health insurance plans in California.

Such issue has been brought out for two major reasons. First, the number of uninsured individuals residing in California is increasing these past recent years. According to the California Health Care Chartbook, 18 percent of the California population in 2002 is not covered by any type of health insurance policy. Moreover, the same thing also applies to 20 percent of California’s elderly population. In other words, there is a percentage of uninsured individuals within every age group in the state.

Such figures are accounted from the immigrants, which are 27 percent from the total population of California. Among this 27 percent, almost half of the immigrants have been residing in the state for less than 5 years do not have their own health insurance plan. Even immigrants who live for more than 5 years do not have their health care plan.

Even the young population of California is also left uninsured. Statistics show that majority of children of legal age (18 years old) are left without any health insurance plan since they are no longer eligible for the Medicaid program or their parents who lost their employment which results in the forfeiture of their health insurance coverage from their employer.

The second issue that concerns health insurance plans in California is the proposals made to change the present health insurance system in the state. It is made to address the problems with regards to the growing number of uninsured California population. Legislators have passed on May 2005 the California Health Insurance Reliability Act, which will guarantee health insurance coverage for every individual residing in the state.

This will replace the present method by the single-payer system with a single non-profit health insurance plan available. In other words, residents of California can now visit the doctor of their choice and all of their medical expenses will be shouldered by their plan. There will be no applicable deductibles for you to pay, which means you will no longer rely on your exhausted pocket for payments of your medical expenses.

This shows that California state authorities value the importance of health insurance plans for California residents. This will ensure that their health needs will be provided, with or without ready cash in their hands.
