College Student Health Insurance: Caring For Your Health While In College
from:
It is a fact that health care today is becoming more and more incredulously expensive. This results in many people getting health insurance for them to something to lean on in times of need. People today are considering health insurance as a necessity in life and are purchasing plans to secure their future health in case something unpleasant happens to them in that may require expensive medical treatments.
Health insurance should be purchased by everyone. Health insurance is one way to care for your health. Besides, many people who don’t have health insurance go into debt just to pay for medical expenses incurred.
However, what if you are a college student that doesn’t have enough money for health insurance? How can you secure your future health if you don’t have health insurance?
It can be very difficult for college students because universities and colleges today require students to have at least a minimum health insurance policy. And, as you may think, “minimum” is not enough. You may want a health insurance policy to have comprehensive coverage yet at an affordable rate.
One common misconception is that most students think that they will still be covered by their parent’s health insurance policy once they enter college or university. However, this is not the case. Most insurance policies terminate coverage on the parent’s dependents, in this case you, from their policy once you reach a certain age (usually 18 to 23 years old). If they do still cover you, chances are you will be attending college out of the coverage area of the policy.
If you are still in the coverage area, you can still continue your parent’s health insurance policy if the insurance company offers you COBRA or Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. COBRA can serve as a temporary solution if you need to be covered until you find your own permanent health insurance policy. COBRA can still cover you for an additional 18 months provided you pay the monthly premium.
However, this can be more expensive than having your own health insurance.
The good news is that there are affordable alternatives to have your own health insurance policy. One is to apply for a health insurance that your college offers (if they do offer it). Some colleges can offer you affordable health insurance. If this is the case, you can consider this as a way to get your health insured.
There are also private companies that can offer inexpensive health insurance for students. This is slightly expensive than what your college can offer but can provide a wider range of benefits for you as a student. There are also some private insurance companies offer discounts to students. If they do, you can consider this as another cheaper alternative.
If you still can’t find the right health insurance for you, you can always get a short-term health insurance or a temporary health insurance. This kind of insurance is temporary as the name suggests, but can cover emergency and accidental expenses. It is also cheap.
When buying health insurance, you should know what you exactly need in a policy. You don’t want to end up paying for a benefit that you think you won’t even use. Try to shop around for quotes in order to get the best possible health insurance for you and at the same time, the most affordable.
You should also know how long you will need the insurance.
To save more money, try to compare different policies. This can help you determine which kind of health insurance is the most affordable with the coverage you need.
