Affordable Student Health Insurance: What to Do If Called Up For Active Duty
from:
Today, terrorism and war have been raging all over the world and many people are being called up to serve their country. Students as young as 18 years old are being sent to hot zones all over the world to fight their country’s enemy or to keep the peace and distribute medicine, food and other supplies for civilians that are affected by the war.
Students who have health insurance and got called up for active duty for their country to fight will not be covered by their health insurance. If you have been called up and you have health insurance, you will never get the benefits in case something happens to you while on active duty.
This is because you will serve in the hotspots in another country, you will be in danger all the time and insurance companies cannot afford to cover you even if your health insurance can cover you abroad.
However, you can still request a refund of the premium. You will fill out a form that you have entered active duty in the military. Doing this will automatically terminate your health insurance policy because your body and your life will always be at risk.
But, even though your student health insurance has been terminated, you can still get the premium you have paid for your student health insurance. The refund amount that will be paid for you is the period where you first paid for your premium up until the last day you paid for your premium.
However, it doesn’t mean that because your health insurance was terminated you will never take advantage health benefits offered by your health insurance policy. Joining the military itself has its perks. You will automatically have comprehensive health insurance coverage offered by the military or the government. Besides, military health plans may be better than what you had before in student health insurance plans.
During the course of war and you have been drafted for military service even if you are still a student, you will automatically terminate your student health insurance policy.
To get the refund for your premiums, you will have to complete a form that will state that you will be refunding your premiums because of being called up in the military. The form should contain the following data:
• Student Name
• Social Security Number
• Address
• Telephone Number
• Email Address
• Current Policy Quarter/Year
• Military Activation Date
You will send this form to your insurance company together with a copy of official military orders that state you have been called up and the date the order was activated, and a form and copy of military orders.
In order to be sure, you should retain a copy of all said documents for record purposes.
If you retain being enrolled in the student health insurance plan, you will not receive any benefits if something happens to you while in the armed forces. Nothing will be contributed by the insurance company if something happens to you at war or resulting from war, declared or undeclared.
These are the things you should do in case you have been called up for active duty in the military. Just keep in mind that the military also has its own health insurance plans that you can take advantage of. These plans can be better than any student health insurance plans.
